Wahweap, Grand Escalante and more Page

10/7 Wednesday -- We got out of the trailer in a bright sunshiny day. It was beautiful and we rolled north on 89 past Glen Canyon Dam and turned into Wahweap, part of Glen Canyon Recreation Area.
The first pull off going to Wahweap Marina is for Navajo Mountain (I called it Mini Devil's Tower)

A popular pastime on Lake Powell is to rent a house boat and spend time touring the lake, exploring the coves, rising jet skis or water skiing. Plenty of fishing opportunities too.

This view is from the Wahweap Overlook off 89 N.
We stopped at the Big Water BLM Visitor's Center for Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This is the first national monument that is administered by the bureau of land management. This wild place that once was covered by an inland sea and then became a marshy bog and finally the desert we see today. Left behind from that time are the skeletons of dinosaurs, whales, shells and other fossils that give a glimpse into the past of this wild land.
After looking at the VC, we drove west on 89 toward Kanab. We only went to the Paria Contact Station and turned around to see if we could travel up Cottonwood Road to Cannonville on the north side of the monument. Unfortunately Cottonwood was closed and many of the dirt roads were washed out due to all the heavy rains.
Instead we tried to go out to White Rocks. I enjoyed getting to off road the Tahoe on some nice dirt roads.

We came to this wash out and ended journey there. We turned around and drove around on a few more roads before giving up, slabbing back to Big Water and trying to go up Smokey Mountain Road that runs along Lake Powell. Once again thwarted. But found some nice dispersed camping spots.

Back across the bridge we turned off to a lake overlook and a sign to a beach. If your beach is solid stone and not sand it is perfect.
Patrick climbed this rock and posed like a woman.

Looking back at the dam.

We stopped at the trailer and then drove out to antelope point marina. Got a closer look at Navajo Mountain.
