10/2 We left Zion River Campground and drove down to Hurricane, UT for groceries, gas and restock the adult beverage cabinet (Disaronno and Southern Comfort if you were wondering). Then we got out of town headed for the north rim of the Grand Canyon.
There were signs all along the road for Pipe Springs National Monument so we had to stop of course.
The springs originally flowed from the rock and were used by the Indians. When the Mormon's came along, they built a fort over it and built several collection pools so they could water their livestock and crops.
The view from the fort. The desert used to be covered in waist high grasses but between over grazing and drought, the grasses were killed off and replaced with the sage and non-native grasses.
Windsor Castle.
Either Batman has his own special cup or Mormons didn't like tea on their mustaches.
While Becky and Patrick took the tour of Windsor Castle Iris and I explored the parking lot.
As we closed in on the Grand Canyon we climbed higher in altitude into the juniper, scrub and Ponderosa pines. My plan was to find some dispersed camping off 67. As we closed in on the junction of 67 and 89A, I saw Jacob's Lake Campground and pulled in. Not bad for $9 a night with park pass. Sure it isn't free camping in the middle of the wilds but I was more comfortable leaving the camper in a campground than leaving it unhooked on some forest road with lots of hunters and tourists traipsing around.
