Alamogordo to Carlsbad

We left Holloman FamCamp behind and climbed up into the Lincoln National Forest and the Sacramento Mountains. Cloudcroft sits about 9000 feet above sea level. It was a climb up through beautiful canyons and orange work cones.

My windshield needs washed!!
Approaching Cloudcroft, we could see an old trestle bridge in one of the canyons.I always think of my brother-in-law Shawn Campbell and his love of trains and think that he would love this. There is a hiking trail system in the area to better view the trestle.

Yeah, I didn't take this picture.
Across the top of the mountain is the Cloudcroft Ski Resort. There wasn't any snow on the hill and it reminded me a lot of Mad River Mtn. in Bellefontaine, Ohio.
The backside of the mountain wasn't as steep and it took a long time to descend.

Cherry trees in bloom.

82 Straightened out and was high plains. The speed limit was 70MPH!! I got passed a lot even at 70. We had lunch at a road side rest in Hope, NM.
We turned south on 285 in Artesia. There was the heavy smell of oil in the air with rigs as far as the eye could see in some spots. You know the area is heavy in oil when Halliburton is on the scene.
Eventually we got to Brantley Lake State Park. A massive lake in the middle of the desert is something to see. They dammed the Pecos River a lot in this area. Patrick got tired of all our dam jokes. No, we don't have any dam pictures.

We had a marvelous view from the handicap designated camping spot. The sun set was marvelous after a hot 85 degree day.
