Sept 10 We left Portland Fairview RV park and rolled north again up I-5 to Mt. St Helen's visitor center. There was a field trip going on and the place was packed with children. This was a state run center and the admission was $5 to get in to look at pictures. We decided not to pony up and rolled on up the highway towards the Johnston Ridge Observatory on Route 504. What can I say the old lady blew here stack back in 1980 and sent a wall of mud and debris rolling down the mountain. I can't say that this was the highlight of the trip but I can check it off the list. This was Becky's stop.
At milepost 33 is the Chester W. Bingham Forest Learning Center. This is primary a promotion for the timber industry around the mountain specifically Weyerhaeuser who sponsored the exhibit. It is well done with movies about the eruption and a hands on learning center. We took some nice pictures of the area from the over look there.
As we worked our way up the mountain, she turned towards us and we could see the blown out area.

We rolled out of the area and back down 5 to Oregon. Crossed a cool bridge over the Columbia and stopped at Fort Stevens State Park. They have a large campground and they had the best shower that I have had all trip. State parks seem to have the best accessible showers for wheelchair users.
