The cold and rain cleared up and the day was beautiful for a boat ride with Pictured Rocks Cruises. I've been wanting to get here and see this place for a while and I wanted to do a little scuba diving around the area. Nah, its cold and I sold my dry suit. So we settled for the Spray Fall Tour on the fast cat.
The crewman on our level said, "I have to take care of you even though you're wearing that sweatshirt." Go Buckeyes!
Miners Castle
Miners Castle
One of the most photographed arches in Pictured Rocks.
This is Souix Chief. You can see his nose projecting out from the rock.
Part of the arch collapsed leaving behind a rock pile in the gap.
This guy is the pirate. On the cliff closest to us, you can see the nose just above the water line and a small cave for his right eye. The upper rocks form his hat.
There was an arch connecting this pinnacle to the mainland but it fall and the ropes that connect the two are actually tree roots that keep the big pine alive.
The final waterfall of the day was this one, the one we paid extra for. On the way back to the dock, we all kept an eye on the eclipse as the moon blocked about seventy percent of the sun.
Off the boat, we stopped at the Visitors Center and then drove up the coast to the second VC.
Along the way, we stopped at the Bear's Den and grabbed a pastie. Meat and potatoes wrapped in a crust. Must be a Michigan thing, wasn't ours.
Last stop was Miners Castle overlook. A ranger was there and I asked him how many people climb out on the rocks every year. He said too many and that they had to rescue a guy last week when he got stuck. I asked what it cost for the rescue. He said they contract it out to the county and it cost about $850. I said that wasn't bad and cheaper than I thought. The ranger smirked and said, "Then we hit them with the fines, another $800 to $1000."
The overlook i took this pic from is accessible, the second overlook has stairs down.
